Week 5 Story

(Genie's Lamp from Wannapik)

A long, long time ago there lived a poor boy named Aladdin. Devestatingly, Aladdin's father passed away tragicly leaving his mother and him to fend for themselves. Aladdin, however, was a lazy boy that would not get his act together and fend for his mother no matter how much she begged him too.
One day as he was running the streets with his friends, a strange man appeared out of nowhere and began questioning him. The man happened to be a famous magician travelling all the way from Africa to meet with Aladdin and his mother. The magician said he was Aladdin's uncle and had come to meet them and bring them many gifts. After showing the mother and Aladdin with gifts, buying Aladdin a place to conduct work and even new wardrobes.
The next day, the magician and Aladdin set out beyind the city walls on a journey into valley and up toward the mountains. It was long and trying and Aladdin was not happy with it and wanted to return home. As the pair reached the base of the mountains the magician pulled out powder throwing it down on the rocks causing the ground to open before them.
Aladdin was terrified at what he saw; yet, forgot all his fears as soon as the magician told him of the treasure that he would behold if he took the keys and followed the stone downwards. Once, he descended the steps he arrived at the three halls finding all that the magician had said including the lamp.
Aladdin refused to hand over the lamp to the magician untill he was out of the pit causing the magician to go into a rage of furry fleeing Persia to never return again.
The magician closed back the entrance leaving Aladdin trapped inside for two days. In a fortunate event Aladdin rubbed the lamp he was holding and a genie suddenly appeared.

Author's Note
I chose to rewrite this tale of Aladdin because it is one of my childhood stories. After learning that the Disney version I grew up hearing my whole life was distorted from the origional intrigued me. Therefore, I enjoyed being able to retell this one from my own vocabulary so you could say.

This story is part of the Arabian Nights unit. Story source: The Arabian Nights' Entertainments by Andrew Lang

  1. Hello Carlee, I liked your retelling of Aladdin because I also loved this story growing up. I think we can all also agree we all grew up watching all the Disney movies and thinking they were all fairytales and happy endings. Now, as we get older and do more research we learn that Disney just did their own retelling of these classic stories.

  2. Hi, Carlee! Aladdin was one of my favorite Disney movies too, and learning that there were more layers to the story surprised me too! The setting was in China, and there were TWO genies? I like how you took the story in your own words and made it an easy read. I feel your writing flows clearly and cleanly that I read it quickly and without confusion. You left it at a cliffhanger though, and now I'm curious if you plan to finish it? Or will you just retell your favorite parts of the story? Thanks for posting this and I enjoyed reading it!

  3. Hi Carlee!

Aladdin was always an interesting story! I, too, was taken by surprise the first time I read the not so disney version! I think you did a really amazing job weaving in details from both to make it your own. I would say that it was a quick and easy read which I love because you can fall in love with a story so quickly!
